High TSH Levels May Cause Infants of Hypothyroid Mothers To Have Visual Problems
Add yet another risk to being hypothyroid and not getting sufficient treatment during early pregnancy: the risk that your child will be born with visual problems. During last week's annual American Thyroid Association Conference, a study was presented that reports that being hypothyroid with an elevated thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) level during the first and second trimester of pregnancy can impair the visual ability of the baby.
According to an ATA press release, these infants "had a significantly reduced ability to see visual contrasts...Adequate contrast sensitivity is an important ability for reading, viewing information of low contrast such as maps, and visuospatial ability in general."
The ATA reports that Joanne F. Rovet, M.D., lead author of the study said that "Mothers with pre-existing hypothyroidism should be monitored closely during their pregnancy to ensure that their hormone levels are adequately adjusted." |
